Pedestrian Tragically Killed in Collision on S.R. 60 in Polk County, Florida
POLK COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report posted at theledger.com, a pedestrian was tragically killed in a collision that happened on State Road 60 in Polk County, Florida. Authorities report that the driver involved stopped and called emergency services after the accident.*
The accident occurred in the late evening by the intersection with Bailey Road on State Road 60. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and The Ledger report that at about 9:30 p.m., a man and a child were walking across the westbound side of the highway. The two were reportedly trying to get to a food truck that was on the other side of the road, and they were walking across the inside lane.
The driver of a westbound car of unknown make and model saw the two pedestrians and swerved to avoid hitting them. The driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling right behind the car then also swerved but was not able to avoid striking the man. Immediately following the crash, deputies say the Dodge driver stopped and called 911. The driver of the car also stopped.
The Ledger reports that the collision threw the man into the grassy median of the highway, and he tragically died at the scene. He was identified as a 46-year-old man from Mulberry, Florida. The Ledger also reports that the child, age 12, was not injured in the accident. The child was reportedly not related to the victim.
The driver of the Dodge was identified as a 48-year-old man from Tampa, Florida. It does not appear that he was injured in the accident, and no passengers were reported to have been in the truck with him. The driver of the car was not identified.
The accident caused the westbound side of State Road 60 to close down for about four hours.
