Three Motorcyclists Injured Wreck in Chatham County, Georgia

CHATHAM COUNTY, GA. – Three motorcyclists were injured in a wreck on Interstate 95 in Chatham County, Georgia, according to an online news report from Little is known about the nature of the crash at this time.*

The wreck occurred at Exit 94 of I-95 in Chatham County. About 100 motorcyclists were riding in the Nine Line Apparel Poker Run on the interstate, which started near the Harley Davidson in Savannah just off I-95. Three of the riders were somehow involved in a collision shortly into the event, and they sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

The three riders were transported to a local hospital for treatment. They have not been identified. Chatham County Police do not yet know what caused the collision and have not released additional details about the wreck at this time. 

Chatham County is located on the eastern border of the state of Georgia and includes the City of Savannah. Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety shows the county sees a large number of traffic accidents each year, and its accident rate is rising rapidly. 

In 2012, a total of 5,659 traffic accidents occurred in Chatham County, resulting in 1,388 injuries and 20 deaths. Two of the fatal wrecks involved motorcyclists. The county’s accident numbers rose dramatically over five years, jumping to 15,806 vehicle accidents in the county in 2016, resulting in 3,760 injuries and 43 deaths. Again, two of the fatal crashes that year involved motorcyclists. 

The highest number of vehicle crash deaths in the county during the five-year period between 2012 and 2016 occurred in 2015. A total of 54 people died in vehicle accidents in Chatham County that year. Seven of the people who died in 2015 accidents were motorcyclists.
