Atlanta Auto Accident Lawyers Montlick & Associates Briefs Parents on TADRA, the Law Designed to Protect Teen Drivers.

Getting a driver's license is a rite of passage and an exciting time for a teen. Yet auto accidents are the leading cause of death for American teens - more than drugs, guns, or any disease - so it's a dangerous time too. That's why TADRA, the Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act, is such an important law. Studies have proven that TADRA does save lives, however the law must be understood and adhered to in order to be effective. To help adults understand the many rules and requirements of TADRA, the Atlanta Auto Accident Attorneys at Montlick & Associates created the video above plus this downloadable safety guide: Parents' Guide to TADRA.

TADRA is a graduated driver's licensing program that requires young drivers - ages fifteen to eighteen to follow a specific, three step process for licensing:

  1. Step one is an instructional permit issued to fifteen year olds once they pass a written exam. While driving, the permit holder must be accompanied by a licensed (Class C) adult 21 years of age or older in the front seat who is capable of exercising control of the vehicle.
  2. Step two is a Class D Intermediate License, granted to drivers sixteen to eighteen who have held an instructional permit for twelve months and who pass a comprehensive on-road driving test. Class D License holders have several requirements and restrictions. As one example, class D license holders are not allowed to drive between midnight and 5am under ANY circumstances.
  3. Step three is a Full Class C License. Granted to drivers eighteen or older who hold a Class D license and have had no major traffic convictions for the previous 12 months.

The above is just a brief summary of Georgia's Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act. To learn more, we urge parents and teens to read our blog Reducing the Risk Posed by Teen Drivers in Georgia. You can also visit the Governor's Office of Highway Safety website for more information.
