18-Wheeler Truck Accidents Are Increasing

March 30, 2020

FL- Southfloridareporter.com writes that truck crashes are increasing around the country, and throughout the entire world. The rate of increase is higher in the U.S., Australia, and in mainland Europe.*

About 500,000 crashes occur every year in the United States. These incidents tragically kill approximately 5,000 people each year.  Tired drivers, flawed vehicles, poor judgment, and inadequate safety procedures likely contribute to the crashes. Other factors include inclement weather, heavy traffic, faulty brakes, and vehicular failure.

For truck drivers, it is important to use caution and take steps to stay safe on the road. First, always make sure that the truck is roadworthy before setting out on long trips. Second, the vehicle should be checked and undergo regular maintenance about every six months, and/or every year.  The age of the vehicle will determine how often it should be serviced.

Insurance is important to maintain as well, and truckers should have policies that cover them over state lines if they drive in multiple states. Drivers should not travel for more than eight hours at a time. Once a driver has traveled for eight hours, it is important to pull over and recharge.  Of course, it is important to never speed. The speed limit should be seen as a limit, not a target.
