The CDC estimates that 65 children under age 10 die on Georgia roadways each year because they are not properly secured in a child safety seat or booster seat. In this week's segment on ABC News, Atlanta mom and child passenger safety advocate, Jenny Harty, reveals how her 5-year old daughter Madison's life was miraculously spared after a catastrophic car accident - because of the booster seat that she was riding in. Montlick & Associates, Georgia Injury Attorneys, Launches New Booster Seat Safety Campaign to Help Educate Public and Prevent Child Fatalities
In response to the recent decline in child safety seat use, the Georgia Injury Attorneys at Montlick & Associates have created a new Child Passenger Safety public service campaign, to launch Monday September 17, 2012 on local tv stations and outdoor billboards throughout the state. The new campaign features Jenny Harty of Johns Creek, GA and her teenage daughter Madison. When Madison was five, her family was in a catastrophic accident while driving on Georgia Highway 308. The Harty's minivan - which was sideswiped by an SUV trying to avoid a logging truck that had just run a stop sign - spun several times before it landed at the bottom of a deep ravine. The impact was so severe that the entire left side of the vehicle, where Madison was seated, was sheered off. The doctors, paramedics and police all credited Madison's miraculous survival to the booster seat that she was riding in.
The experienced car accident attorneys from Montlick & Associates want to remind parents that factory-installed seat belts are intended for adult use and do not offer adequate protection for children. Booster seats are required to raise a child to a position that allows the shoulder belt to fit properly across the chest and hip. According to the new Georgia law that went into effect in July 2011, booster seats are required for all children under eight, unless they are 4'9" or taller. To learn more, please watch the video and click on the links posted at the top of this page.
In 2004, after tireless campaigning by Jenny Harty for tougher child passenger safety laws, the Georgia Legislature passed "Madison's Law", raising the booster seat requirement to age six. New legislation that went into effect in July 2011, raises the requirement to age 8, or 4'9".
