Safety experts state that it is better for parents to keep an eye on toy safety so that they can prevent a trip to the emergency room. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), over 200,000 people were treated in emergency rooms for toy-related injuries in 2021. Safety experts also recommend that parents and gift-givers think about toy safety when buying gifts for children.

Doctor Roopa Thakur, a Cleveland Clinic Children’s pediatrician, recommends that gift-givers avoid all toys that shoot objects into the air because these toys cause serious injuries. Dr. Thakur blames these toys for causing serious eye injuries.

Another toy that parents and gift-givers should avoid when shopping for children’s gifts is toys that have small parts because these can be choking hazards for small children.

The two most dangerous toys that parents and gift-givers should avoid are toys that have high-powered magnets or button batteries. Should a child swallow these, they can suffer internal tissue and intestinal damage, requiring emergency surgical intervention. Toys containing high-powered magnets have led to several deaths.

According to safety experts, most toy-related injuries are caused by non-motorized scooters. That is why people should purchase safety gear when they buy bicycles, scooters, rollerblades, or tricycles.

Dr. Thakur said that you should consider providing a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads if you are giving a child a hover scooter or something similar. It is difficult to avoid an accident, but this equipment could prevent an injury.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also suggests checking the manufacturer’s age limit on the packaging and checking for safety recalls prior to making a purchase.
