BREVARD COUNTY, FL – According to an online news report at spacecoastdaily.com, AAA is urging drivers to slow down and be alert when in school zones, as many students will be soon heading back to school. If drivers fail to do so, it can have serious consequences including serious injuries or fatalities.*

According to the Transportation Research Board, approximately 100 children die on an annual basis when walking to or from school and roughly 25,000 sustain serious injuries.

The afternoon hours, when students are leaving school, is the most dangerous time period for student pedestrian accidents. This time frame is between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

In light of the above, AAA is reminding drivers to:

  • Avoid speeding in school zones. There is a reason why speed is reduced in a school zone, as it is often replete with student pedestrians and vehicles. A pedestrian that is hit by a vehicle going 25 mph is about 2/3 less likely to die in an accident compared to a pedestrian that is struck by a car going 10 mph faster.
  • Always come to a complete stop. According to research, 1/3 of drivers in school zones fail to come to a complete stop, leading to serious and sometimes fatal accidents. Always look for children located in crosswalks or on sidewalks before proceeding.
  • Do not drive while distracted. According to research, taking your eyes off the roadway for 2 seconds doubles your risk of being involved in an accident. Since children move quickly, may cross the road unexpectedly, or emerge between 2 cars that are packing, avoid such distractions such as eating, texting, or fiddling with a radio or GPS system.
  • Look out for school buses. In Florida, it is illegal for drivers to pass a school bus with its arm extended and red lights flashing. Even though this is prohibited by law, some drivers disobey the law, which sometimes results in injuries or fatalities.
