UNITED STATES – According to an online news report posted by npr.org, a recent report shows that Georgia and Florida were among five states in the U.S. with the highest number of pedestrian deaths. The report was released earlier this year by the Governors Highway Safety Association and shows that the country has reached a 28-year record for pedestrian fatalities.*

In 2018, a total of 6,227 pedestrians died due to traffic accidents in the United States, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) report. This number shows an increase in pedestrian deaths of 4 percent from 2017 and the highest number of pedestrian deaths since 1990.

“While we have made progress reducing fatalities among many other road users in the past decade, pedestrian deaths have risen 35 percent [since 2008],” said Jonathan Adkins, executive director of GHSA. “The alarm bells continue to sound on this issue; it’s clear we need to fortify our collective efforts to protect pedestrians and reverse the trend.”

The GHSA report shows pedestrian fatality rates for each state in the U.S. during the first six months of the year, and five states accounted for almost half of all the pedestrian deaths in the country in 2018. The pedestrian fatality totals for Georgia, Florida, Texas, California, and Arizona made up 46 percent of the country’s total.

California had the highest pedestrian death rate of any state with 432 pedestrians killed in 2018. New Hampshire, on the other hand, had the lowest pedestrian death rate. One pedestrian was killed in the state of New Hampshire during the first half of 2018.
