GEORGIA – According to an online report at wfxl.com, accidents are twenty three times more likely if driving while distracted. As such, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety as well as Georgia law enforcement have banded together with the National Highway Traffic Safety administration in light of April being “Distracted Driving Awareness Month.”*

Pursuant to a news conference at the Law Enforcement Center in Albany, Georgia, officials note that the above referenced departments all worked together to promote Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The reason for Distracted Driving Month is to reduce the number of these often deadly types of accidents. In fact, the Georgia Department of Transportation provides that distracted driving accidents in Georgia has increased by over four hundred percent over the last ten years. In 2016, there were over 25,000 accidents where distracted driving was a crash factor. This is compared to over 5,700 distracted driving crashes back in 2006. These statistics are astounding, hence the government and law enforcement personnel’s activities to promote safe driving.

The above brings to mind what are the most common causes of accidents, with distracted driving at the top of the list. The top three most common causes of accidents are as follows:

  • Distracted driving – This is the number one cause of accidents in Georgia and across the United States. Distracted drivers are those who divert their attention from the roadway due to eating, drinking, texting, talking on a cell phone or multi-tasking (i.e., putting on makeup while driving).
  • Speeding – Those who speed ignore the speed limit and drive ten, twenty and even thirty miles per hour over the set limit. Speeding causes several serious and sometimes fatal accidents. If you drive too fast, your reaction time is reduced significantly in order to avoid a crash.
  • Drunk Driving – Drunk driving accidents are on the rise across the United States. When someone is intoxicated when behind the wheel, they are unable to function properly and focus, which is very dangers and could lead to serious and sometimes fatal accidents.
