GEORGIA – Reportedly there has been less traffic on Georgia roadways, but the number of fatal accidents has continued to climb.

The pandemic has been both good and bad for Atlanta traffic. For example, when businesses and schools were closed, there were fewer motorists on the road, making commuting much easier and faster for motorists. However, the speed of drivers on highways in Georgia and throughout the United States has also increased.

New crash data from the Georgia Department of Transportation shows that fatal accidents are becoming worse due to higher speeds. When more people are driving faster, the number of deadly accidents increases. By September 8, 2021, 1,165 people had been tragically killed in traffic accidents on Georgia highways. Georgia Department of Transportation announced to the State Transportation Board last Thursday that there has been an 8% increase over the same time frame last year. Fatal pedestrian accidents have increased by 17%.

GDOT’s State Safety Engineer, Sam Harris, blamed the increasing traffic fatalities on three things: speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, other U.S. states are witnessing increases in fatal traffic accidents. The preliminary statistics show that more than 8,700 people have tragically died in traffic accidents throughout the U.S. in just the first three months of 2021. This is an increase of 10.5% over the same period in 2020.
