ATLANTA, GA- According to ajc.com, Interstate 285 is the worst interstate in the country when it comes to deadly crashes. A study using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determined that while the interstate does not take the top spot for overall deaths, it does come in first in deaths per mile.*

The record for most deaths on any road goes to Interstate 4 in Florida. However, even in that number, Interstate 285 comes in second place with 26 deadly crashes and 29 fatalities occurring during one year’s time. The better way to determine the deadliness of a road though is to look at the deaths per mile. By that measure, Interstate 285 had a record of 3.5 fatalities for every ten miles of road in just one year. That figure indicates that the interstate has .5 more deaths per ten miles than the next most dangerous road in the country.

There are a number of reasons why Interstate 285 is so problematic. For instance, the road’s design creates safety problems, and the prevalence of large trucks means that crashes are more likely to end in tragedy. The road is also popular with non-local motorists who are navigating an unfamiliar area.

Drivers maneuvering around the many big rigs can easily become stuck in a trucker’s blind spot leading to crashes or truck drivers attempting to swerve to avoid a wreck. As a result, there are many instances where trucks overturn or collide with smaller cars leading to some horrific accidents.

Some locations on the road also have sharp turns that come as a surprise to motorists from outside of the area. The Interstate 285/Interstate 20 interchange is one of several locations that present a high risk of a crash. And with so many trucks around, there is a greater chance of serious consequences for those involved.
