SAVANNAH, GA- Wtoc.com writes that thousands of crashes occur at intersections in Savannah each year. Some intersections prove to be more hazardous than others. For instance, the WTOC writes that danger zones exist in spots such as White Bluff’s intersection with Abercorn. That intersection has more accidents than any other in the city. The state reported that in recent years, about one out of every five intersection collisions in Savannah resulted in an injury or a fatality.*

Five percent of the city’s population was involved in crashes at intersections in one year alone. After Abercorn and White Bluff, the next most dangerous intersections were Interstate 16 and Chatham Parkway (which actually tied for first place), King George and Abercorn, Abercorn and Rio Road, Derenne Avenue and Truman Parkway, and Martin Luther King and 37th Street.

While the traffic is often heavy in the morning when people are rushing to work, the most dangerous time for intersection crashes appears to be when drivers are heading home. The period from twelve pm to six pm was when the majority of incidents occurred.

The city also pointed out the first responders who arrive on the scene of these crashes often face dangers as well. One paramedic was outside of an ambulance when a driver sideswiped the vehicle, nearly causing a deadly crash.

While the intersections may be located in Savannah, many of the roads involved are state routes, meaning that the city is not in charge of improving those roadways or intersections. Instead, the improvements are up to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Some officials also point out that the crashes are the result of driver mistakes and not intersection design. Distracted driving is a common culprit.
