The Most Common Causes of Vehicle Collisions

December 12, 2019

USA - At least ten million car accidents occur on the road every year in the United States, according to DRIVERKNOWLEDGE.com. Fatal car crashes are the third leading cause of death in the United States, following cancer and heart attacks. Car crashes are mostly preventable and with driver education, we can help reduce the amount of collisions that occur. In fact, more than 90 percent of accidents are the result of human error.*

One of the most common causes of car crashes is distracted driving. In recent years, distracted driving has become increasingly associated with texting while driving and talking on a cell phone. Texting while driving is a significant problem considering that a person who is texting is 23 times more likely to get into a crash than a person who is not engaged in this type of behavior. However, distracted driving also can also mean a number of other things, such as, the driver is eating, getting too occupied with events other than driving, applying makeup, merely fiddling with the radio dial or taking eyes of the roadway.

Speeding accounts for a large number of accidents, as well.  Seventy-five percent of drivers who are speeding know that they are speeding beyond the limit and choose to do it anyway.  When a driver exceeds the speed limit, the driver reduces important reaction time in the event of an emergency.  Speed limits are not arbitrarily set.  Speed limits are set based off of various factors, such as nearby population density, weather, road terrains and highway traffic intersections.  Traveling faster than the speed limit creates new dangers for everyone on the road.

Reckless driving involves individuals making quick, often illegal traffic maneuvers. This could mean rapid lane changes, tailgating, or ignoring traffic signals or signs.

Studies show that drunk driving kills one person every 53 minutes.  Drivers under the influence are still causing thousands of deaths every year even though calling a sober driver, taxi or ride-share service can easily prevent these tragedies.

The weather also causes crashes; however, in most instances, the cause of this type of accident is a combination of the weather and people failing to drive safely for the conditions present that day.
