WASHINGTON, DC – A news report states that a new Bosch accident research study discovered that Lateral Actuator Systems in Class 7 and 8 trucks could reduce truck accident costs. The Bosch analysis finds by equipping commercial trucks with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to keep commercial trucks in their traffic lane, the overall costs of truck accidents go down. The technology can save lives and could also improve profits for trucking companies.

According to Bosch’s accident study, “Safety + Enhanced Driver Comfort: Steering in Commercial Vehicle ADAS Systems,” Bosch discovered that Lateral Actuator Systems in Class 7 and 8 trucks reduce the costs of truck accidents by as much as $3,700 per year, per heavy truck. That saves the trucking company or private trucker 4 cents per mile driven.

Lateral Actuator Systems are a type of Advanced Driver Assistance System that provides “Automated Steering Input” such as “Lane Change Assist” and “Lane-Keeping Systems.”

The Bosch trucking accident study analyzed public accident information to analyze data and connect motor vehicle types with the severity of accidents. The data was then used to calculate a Field of Effect (FoE) for large trucking accidents. To calculate the FoE, the researchers reviewed each truck accident to determine if the accident would have been avoided or if the severity of the accident would have been diminished if the trucks were equipped with Lateral Actuator Systems, especially “Lane Change Assist” and “Lane-Keeping Systems.”

The results of the Bosche accident study showed that injuries from Class 7 and 8 truck accidents would have been reduced by up to 23%, and accident deaths would have fallen by up to 19% when the truck is the “accident-triggering” motor vehicle. The study also estimates that “Lane Change Assist” and “Lane-Keeping Systems” would reduce property damage from Class 7 and 8 trucks by as much as 35% when the truck is the accident-triggering vehicle.

The study demonstrates statistically that even at a hypothetical 50% effectiveness of the FoE, a Lateral Actuator System could equal savings of about $9,000 per truck over a five-year span.

Kevin O’Keefe, the Regional President of Automotive Steering for Bosch in North America, states that the actual full value of crash avoidance technology in all vehicles is the value of saving human life.
