Recently, in a move to curb these needless personal injuries from occurring, the Consumer Product Safety Commission proposed banning all models of drop-side baby cribs in order to require tougher testing standards. The decision was unanimous in a 5-0 vote.

The new rules that the commission propose include such requirements as testing the cribs without re-tightening screws in between tests so that the results accurately show the lifetime use of the crib. Another new safety measure would make full-sized cribs and smaller cribs pass the same performance tests. The CPSC’s proposed new standards regarding drop-side cribs should be finalized by the end of the year.

In the past, parents in Atlanta and other surrounding cities and counties in Georgia, have opted to buy drop-side baby cribs because they make it easier to take babies and toddlers in and out of the cribs to care for them. Earlier this year, Pottery Barn recalled several thousand of their drop-side cribs due to reported defects in the hardware.
