According to an online news report,, the total number of fatal pedestrian accidents has already surpassed last year’s totals. The news report states that the number of pedestrian deaths in both Tennessee and Nashville has exceeded last year’s numbers.

According to Nashville Police, 37 people walking or biking have tragically lost their lives in Nashville, Tennessee. This is four more than last year. The number of pedestrian deaths in the State of Tennessee is much worse. In 2020, 148 people were killed in pedestrian accidents. In 2019, 128 pedestrians lost their lives.

According to Lindsey Ganson, Walk Bike Nashville Advocacy and Communications Director, there are fewer vehicles on the road, and therefore drivers are able to drive much faster. She also stated, “You’re hearing from people in neighborhoods and on local streets that there are just more people speeding down their local streets than ever.”

The combination of people going outside and drivers speeding creates a very dangerous environment for pedestrians.

Fortunately, many cities across the United States have already been working on new solutions to improve pedestrian safety. For example, Walk Bike Nashville is working with Nashville officials to install additional crosswalks roadways. City officials recognize that pedestrians should not have to walk a mile in order to use a crosswalk.

Walk Bike Nashville is also beginning to assess where street lighting is necessary for public safety. The group also is identifying places that should have crosswalk signals that offer longer intervals for pedestrians to cross the street. Walk Bike Nashville and law enforcement hope by implementing additional safety measures, many lives will be saved in Nashville.
