Pedestrian Crashes Rise Dramatically in the United States
USA- The nypost.com writes that there are several leading theories as to the cause of the spike in fatal pedestrian crashes in the United States. Recent numbers indicate that in 2019, more people died in these incidents than at any point in the last 30 years. Three likely factors contributing to the high death toll may include smartphones, legalized marijuana, and SUVs.*
Early estimates from the Governor's Highway Safety Association indicate that 6,590 people lost their lives in pedestrian crashes last year. The numbers demonstrate a five percent increase as compared to 2018 and a shocking 60 percent rise since 2009. The number of people killed in these collisions has not been this high since 1988.
The author of the report stated that smartphones are part of the issue. Drivers are not just texting, but sometimes watching videos on their mobile devices. The phones may be mounted in cars, but motorists are also taking their eyes off the road and looking at screens while traveling at high speeds.
The rising number of motorists traveling in SUVs and other large vehicles is another factor. While there is little evidence linking the legalization of marijuana to the pedestrian crisis, it has been suggested. The most dangerous states where these pedestrian fatalities occur in the highest numbers include Georgia, Florida, California, Texas, and Arizona. Together, those states account for 47 percent of the national pedestrian death toll.
