Union Uses Florida Bridge Collapse to Push for Legislation

April 01, 2020

USA - Courant.com writes that some union workers are unhappy with the Department of Transportation’s use of outside consultants when it comes to bridge and road construction projects.

Unionized DOT engineers are backing a new law that would require that DOT engineers inspect all highway and bridge projects conducted in the state, preventing outside consultants from doing so. The union sparked controversy by backing their position with a flier showing two photos - one of the Arrigoni Bridge in Connecticut, which will soon be renovated, and the other showing the pedestrian bridge that collapsed in 2018 close to the Florida International University. The projects both involved the FIGG Engineering Group. The pedestrian bridge collapsed and killed six people.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has placed a great deal of the blame for the deadly pedestrian bridge collapse on the bridge engineering company. Now the same engineering company is working on the renovations on the Arrigoni suspension bridge, which spans the Connecticut River. The project will take two years and $46 million to complete.

The flier claimed that the firm was unable to handle the construction of the pedestrian bridge, making it dangerous to have the same people plan to work on a larger bridge. The DOT stated that the flier is just fearmongering and that it is misleading, shameful, and wrong.

However, Texas removed the firm’s status of “engineer on record” from a job recently after the report on the Florida bridge collapse was published.

The NTSB stated in their report that the fatal Florida bridge collapse was caused by “load and capacity calculation errors.”
