AAA Safety Tips for Preventing Motorcycle Accidents

January 14, 2020

North Carolina  - Motorcycle accidents and fatalities are rising in North Carolina, and AAA Carolinas has offered some safety tips for both motorcyclists and other drivers that can help prevent dangerous collisions. AAA says that distracted driving and failure to observe motorcyclists on the road account for many deadly motorcycle accidents in North Carolina and South Carolina.

In 2018, 170 motorcyclists tragically died in North Carolina. This figure represented an increase of more than 20 percent from the prior year (2017), according to information compiled by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Officials have not yet finalized figures from 2019, but it is possible it could be the deadliest year yet in motorcyclist fatalities.

AAA Carolinas reports that distracted driving and use of handheld devices behind the wheel contribute to many fatal motorcycle accidents. Drivers also often turn in front of or merge into motorcyclists because they fail to see them. The organization recommends simple steps that everyone on the road can take to keep motorcyclists safe.

Most importantly, AAA urges drivers to never operate their vehicles while distracted or impaired. Always keep your phone stored away and always arrange for a sober ride home. When sharing the road with motorcycles, drivers need to give riders room and follow five seconds or more behind them. Before changing lanes, carefully check all your mirrors and your blind spots to ensure that a motorcyclist is not in your path.

In addition, AAA recommends that motorcyclists pay close attention to others on the road when passing, merging, or changing lanes. Motorcyclists should maintain all lights and markers on their bikes, and always use lights at night or during inclement weather. AAA recommends that riders should wear helmets and appropriate gear to protect themselves in the event of a collision.
