GEORGIA – As discussed in an online article from jdsupra.com, road construction in the state of Georgia can often pose hazards for drivers. Some of these hazards are created by other drivers, and some are created by the conditions present in the workzone.*

On a national level, in 2015, close to 97,000 vehicle accidents occurred in work zones in the United States. This information is according to the Federal Highway Administration, which says most of these accidents caused property damage and injuries.

More than 20,000 traffic crashed happened in Georgia construction zones in 2017, leading to the deaths of 55 people. According to the Georgia State Transportation Board, a large percentage of accident that happen in construction zones are due to speeding and failing to observe signs posted before and throughout the zone.

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway safety says the vast majority of victims of fatal construction zone accidents in the state — close to 80 percent — are drivers or passengers. This means when people do not adjust their speed or driving to the conditions of the work zone, they place themselves, their passengers, and other motorists at risk, along with workers in the zone.

Some of the hazards associated with construction zones, aside from speeding, include improper signage, abrupt turns, and uneven road surfaces. Signs are supposed to be placed a certain distance from construction zones to alert drivers to the work ahead, and they are supposed to indicate to drivers what conditions are coming throughout the work zone. If these are not correctly placed, drivers can be in danger.

In addition, too sharp of turns and uneven road surfaces can lead to loss of control and vehicle crashes inside the work zones.
