June 5, 2018 (ajc.com). According to an online report from ajc.com, while distracted driving is the usual culprit for accidents across the State of Georgia, but as pedestrian deaths are beginning to increase, other factors are being looked into by transportation experts to hopefully reduce the number of fatalities.*

Per the report, “111 pedestrians have been killed on state roads, according to Georgia Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) preliminary numbers, an increase of 16 percent from this time last year. In 2017, 260 pedestrians were struck and killed around the state.”

The leading counties for the most deaths involving pedestrians are Fulton and DeKalb, per the United States Department of Transportation.

Why are there so many accidents?

According to two studies released this past spring, the number of pedestrian deaths (which include hit and run accidents) are climbing both nationally and in Georgia.

Last year in Georgia, “260 pedestrians were killed on state roads, up from 232 in 2016. And the 260 deaths last year was double the number killed in 2011, according to GDOT.”

On a national level, “pedestrian crash deaths have increased 46 percent since their low point in 2009 and account for 16 percent of crash fatalities, according to The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).”

Per the IIHS, the most common factors in pedestrian accidents are as follows:

  • They occur in urban and suburban areas
  • The pedestrian does did not use an intersection to cross the road
  • The vehicle involved was an SUV or high horsepower automobile
  • The pedestrian failed to use a crosswalk when one is available
  • The pedestrian or the driver was impaired or distracted
