ATLANTA, Ga. — According to an article appearing in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 130 people were tragically killed in pedestrian accidents in January through June of 2018, which is 32 percent higher than the same timeframe in 2017. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution cites the study conducted annually by the Governors Highway Safety Association. The Governors Highway Safety Association annually compiles motor vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle, large truck, and motorcycle statistics and trends.*
Some people speculate that the state’s increasing population leads to additional vehicles on the road, which in turn increases the chances a pedestrian could get hit. A growing population also means that more pedestrians will take to the streets as well.
The most recent report published by the Governors Highway Safety Association strongly predicts that the nation’s pedestrians are in grave danger, even though the total number of pedestrians fatalities slightly dropped. A person speaking on behalf of the Association told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that more must be done to protect pedestrians in the United States. The spokesperson also expressed an urgent need to reverse the trend that began emerging several years ago.
The report produced by the Governors Highway Safety Association refers to numerous factors that contribute to the growing problem of pedestrian deaths nationally. Some of the problems cannot be controlled by government enforcement like growing population, weather, increased miles driven, and gas prices. The relative size of the vehicles on the road also contributes to the death toll, as well.
