An article from The Washington Post sheds light on an increase in scooter injuries in the U.S., as reported by emergency room doctors around the country. Higher numbers of people are requiring emergency medical care because of e-scooter accidents.
Around the United States, physicians in emergency departments are reporting an increase in the number of people coming in with textbook car accident trauma. These people have facial injuries, head trauma, and broken bones — injuries usually associated with vehicle accidents. However, many of these people were involved in e-scooter accidents.
With e-scooter companies rapidly expanding their market from city to city, the number of scooter accidents is growing. Many people are injured crashing their scooters, but a significant number of people are also injured because a scooter rider crashed into them.
The Santa Monica Fire Department was called to the scene of 30 scooter accidents. An emergency department in the same city treated 18 people who had injuries from scooter accidents in the final two weeks of July alone in 2018. This is a pattern showing up throughout California and across the country.
Scooter companies, like Bird and Lime, respond to the accident reports by saying that safety is their top priority. However, Bird lobbied fiercely in favor of a California bill that removed helmet requirements for riders older than 18. The big companies are doing everything they can to prevent injured people from filing lawsuits for injuries they’ve suffered.
The legal landscape is already in the midst of changing around these two-wheeled vehicles, as more and more people are looking for answers and justified compensation.
