Brevard County, FL – According to a report issued Wednesday of last week from floridatoday.com, Brevard County is again ranking as one of the most deadly places in the United States to be a pedestrian or bicyclist.

The Space Coast has ranked number three in the United States according to a report entitled “Dangerous by Design,” which represents a study that was compiled by Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition. The report examined annual pedestrian related deaths per one hundred thousand people to generate its results.

Two years prior, Brevard County was ranking 2nd on the report’s Pedestrian Dangerous Index. The change in spots from number two to three offered little hope to local transportation officials, who are in the process of developing a campaign to influence Floridians to become a part of a solutions-based approach to traffic and pedestrian related issues.

“I suppose third is better than being No. 2 but overall it’s not good,” said Georganna Gillette, executive director of the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization. “We have a lot of work do.”

According to the aforementioned report, Florida has 8 of the ten dangerous metropolitan areas in the U.S., which are caused by road design flaws and streets for pedestrians, as well as increased in population.

Per the Pedestrian Danger Index of the report, it calculated how potentially dangerous it is for individuals to walk around Floridian metro areas, based upon the amount of those hit and killed by drivers while on foot.

The report’s “Pedestrian Danger Index” has calculated how dangerous it is for people to walk in a given busy area based on the number of people struck and killed by drivers while walking. The following is a ranking of the most dangerous areas to be a pedestrian:

No 1 — Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford

No. 2 — Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach

No. 3 — Brevard

No. 4 — North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton

No. 5 — Lakeland-Winter Haven

No. 6 — Jacksonville

No. 8 — Cape Coral-Fort Myers

No. 9 — Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater
