USA- Accidents involving e-scooters and other micro-mobility devices are on the rise in the United States.*
Those who choose to use these forms of transportation praise the fact that they are convenient, fun, and cost-effective. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that despite the benefits of scooters, injuries and deaths are on the rise, and micro-mobility devices present some inevitable risks.
The CPSC recommends that consumers use caution and follow certain safety recommendations if they choose to ride these devices. One of the most important things to remember, according to officials at the CPSC, is to slow down. Speeding on a micro-mobility device creates many risks, and injuries resulting from a crash at high speeds are more likely to be severe. Wearing a helmet at all times is another way to prevent tragic accidents. Head injuries are a common result of crashes involving these devices. Riders should also be prepared to stop and be cautious about where they are riding and what is happening around them.
Emergency room department visits involving e-scooters increased from 7,700 in 2017 to 27,700 by 2019. Common injuries include contusions and abrasions, injuries to upper and lower limbs, and head and neck injuries.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that those who use e-scooters follow all of the safety information provided by the companies that manufacture these devices. For example, these devices are intended for adults, and children should not ride on scooters designed for adult users. Because scooters are small and do not make much noise, it is important to remember that sharing the road with other larger vehicles can be dangerous, and other drivers are likely to overlook people on scooters.
