Common Causes of Car Accidents in the State of Georgia

January 19, 2019

The World Health Organization reports that about 1.25 million people die every year in traffic accidents. A significantly higher number of people — 20 to 50 million — are injured every year in traffic accidents. Many of the same factors lead to these accidents.

Distracted Driving – Studies indicate that anywhere from 25 to 50 percent of all car accidents in the United States are due to distracted driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 9 percent of all fatal car accidents in the U.S. are caused by driver distraction. The bulk of distracted driving accidents are related to cell phone use, which is why Georgia enacted its Hands-Free law prohibiting drivers from holding their cell phones (or any other electronic devices) while in their vehicles.

Drowsy Driving – Fatigued drivers cause about 20 percent of all traffic crashes and about 25 percent of all fatal or injury-causing accidents. People do not understand how greatly lack of sleep affects their concentration and reaction times. Even a few missed hours of sleep in one night can increase a person’s risk of an accident.

Drunk Driving – In 2016, almost 30 percent of all U.S. road deaths were related to drunk driving. In total, nearly 10,500 people were killed in crashes caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol. All states have laws against drunk driving, and some states are considering lowering their alcohol limits for drivers. For instance, in Utah now, a driver with a blood-alcohol content of .05 or greater will be charged with DUI.
