Drowsy Drivers Cause About 328,000 Accidents in the United States Per Year

April 12, 2021

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reported that approximately 328,000 motor vehicle accidents per year are caused by sleepy drivers in the United States.  The study also states that about 109,000 of those accidents resulted in an injury, and another 6,400 accidents result in death.

According to the study's data, the predicted cost of accident-related injuries and fatalities without property damage is closer to $109 billion per year.  Federal agency numbers are lower but are still tragic. The study estimates there are around 350% more deaths connected to drowsy driving than reported.   The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports about 100,000 accidents, 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 accident-related fatalities each year.

Another study reports 40% of drivers acknowledged that they fell asleep while driving.  A National Sleep Foundation study reported that nearly 50% of the population regularly drives while sleepy.  Around 20% of all drivers state that they have fallen asleep while driving a vehicle one or more times in the last year.

Drowsy driving is hazardous to the driver, occupants in the vehicle, and the other motorists on the road because drowsy driving resembles drunk driving, including slowed reaction time, blurred vision, and bad decision making.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
