Two Day Distracted Driving Crackdown Conducted by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Resulting in Eighty Nine Warnings or Citations
CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA – According to an online news report at northwestgeorgianews.com, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office just finished a two day crackdown on distracted driving on Thursday, April 25, 2019, resulting in sixty one citations and twenty eight warnings.*
All of the distracted driving stops were due to cellphone use, per a sheriff’s office spokesperson. The crackdown was an effect to raise awareness of the laws that are meant to prohibit distracted driving, such as Georgia’s hands free law that became effective as of last year. In fact, April is “Distracted Driver Awareness Month.” This law prevents people from using cellphones unless it is in hands free mode when behind the wheel.
“In 2017 (before the law) we investigated 34 fatal accidents,” said the sheriff’s office spokesperson. “In 2018 (law took effect July 1) we investigated 18 fatal accidents.” So far in 2019, the sheriff’s office has investigated one fatal accident, he said. “According to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in 2016 there were 25,215 crashes in the state of Georgia where ‘inattentive,’ ‘cell phone’ or ‘distracted’” was listed as a contributing factor, compared to 5,784 such crashes in 2006,” the spokesperson noted.
According to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, they have indicated certain steps drivers can take to avoid distractions when behind the wheel. These are as follows:
- If you receive a text message or need to send one, pull your vehicle over in a safe place and put your automobile in park.
- If you must send or receive text messages, make one of your passengers responsible for helping you to send or respond to messages.
- Use a cellphone holder and always engage your car’s Bluetooth capability when behind the wheel. You cannot use a handset. It’s the law!
- Place your cellphone in your glove compartment, trunk or some other place where you cannot access the phone while driving. This helps you to avoid the temptation to use the phone.
