COLUMBIA, S.C. — The results of a new study recently released prove that Columbia, South Carolina is one of the most accident-prone municipalities in the U.S. In fact three South Carolina cities: Columbia, Charlotte, and Greenville appear in the top ten according to WISTV.COM. Assuming the data is statistically valid, the study conclusively shows that South Carolina is one of the most hazardous states in which to drive in the country.

The results of the study might not be earth-shattering to people who live and work in Columbia, Charlotte, and Greenville. Charlotte ranked one slot higher than Columbia. Charlotte finished sixth and Columbia seventh. Greenville was ranked tenth. The media report does not indicate how many accidents were recorded in each of these South Carolina cities.

The researchers who ran the study did not merely add accident reports and reach a conclusion. Instead, they figured in the population of the cities and devised an accident rate. Using this methodology allows researchers to compare driving and other human behaviors on an even playing field with each city. An accident rate is typically expressed as a number out of every 100,000 residents. Several other cities from the Southeast made the list. Atlanta was 15th; Durham, N.C. was 22nd and Birmingham, AL rounded out the top 25.
