GEORGIA- Pedestrian fatalities are on the rise throughout the state of Georgia, according to RIDESAFEGEORGIA.ORG. Numbers indicate that in just a three-year period between 2014 and 2017, the number of pedestrians tragically killed in traffic accidents in the state rose from 163 to 253.*

Driver behavior leads to many of these tragic incidents. Motorists frequently fail to understand the laws that pertain to pedestrians. Drivers may travel too close to pedestrians, fail to give people in crosswalks the right of way, or otherwise disregard the safety of vulnerable road users. In some instances, drivers cause fatal pedestrian crashes as they speed in school zones, drive while distracted by their phones, and while drunk or under the influence of drugs. Red light violations also put pedestrians in harm’s way.

Drivers may not realize that they are not permitted to squeeze past a pedestrian who is in a crosswalk. When a pedestrian is in a crosswalk, before proceeding, drivers must let the person cross the half of the road where they are driving,. On the other hand, a pedestrian who is not in a crosswalk is meant to yield to drivers.

One reason the number of crashes increased is that the population in Georgia is increasing as well. With more people and more cars on the road, there is a greater risk of mishaps

The state is addressing certain risks in an effort to reduce the number of pedestrian crashes that take place. By tackling distracted driving and other driving violations, the state is hoping to prevent these crashes.
