According to a medical negligence article, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that over 138 million patients are harmed by doctors’ errors annually.

The World Health Organization also estimates that medical negligence tragically kills 2.6 million people a year. Medical malpractice includes:

  • errors in diagnosis,
  • medical treatment, and
  • medicine prescription mistakes, including the inappropriate use of drugs.

According to WHO patient-safety coordinator Dr. Neelam Dhingra-Kumar, medical malpractice continues to occur because healthcare systems are not designed to address medical errors and learn from them. Dr. Dhingra-Kumar also admits that medical facilities often try to hide what they did wrong, and this causes them to avoid taking the appropriate measures to ensure these medical mistakes aren’t repeated. Dhingra-Kumar beleives that one of the key reasons why medical errors happen is due to the lack of a hierarchy in hospitals and poor communication among medical staff.

The WHO believes that one out of every ten people who receive medical care is the victim of medical errors. The Geneva-based organization also reported that medicine prescription mistakes cost global healthcare systems $42 billion. A few years ago, the World Health Organization created World Patient Safety Day. The day is celebrated every September 17 and is designed to raise global awareness concerning medical errors.
