Are You Suffering Back Pain After a Car Accident?

April 25, 2022

Although seatbelts are critical, life-saving devices, they can often cause back and neck injuries as they restrain an accident victim during a crash.

Seatbelts are designed to keep passengers from being thrown from a motor vehicle during a collision or rollover accident. However, the sudden movement and subsequent restraint can create a "whip-like" movement along an accident victim's spine. Back pain is caused by the following types of back injuries:

  • Cauda Equina Syndrome - Cauda Equina Syndrome is a rare type of spinal stenosis where the nerves in the lower back are compressed, leading to back pain. The symptoms of Cauda Equina Syndrome are comparable with sciatica. The symptoms of numbness, pain and weakness make it challenging to stand up after sitting or can make sufferers stumble as they walk. Other Cauda Equina Syndrome symptoms include incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and bladder troubles. People who suffer from Cauda Equina Syndrome may require surgery to prevent damage that can lead to permanent paralysis of the legs.
  • Degenerative Spinal Disorder - Degenerative Spinal Disorder is a medical condition that can involve degenerative scoliosis, spinal osteoarthritis, and spondylolisthesis. These medical conditions are linked with spine tissues degenerating over time due to natural aging. The disorder is caused by physical trauma.
  • Discogenic Pain - Discogenic Pain is identified by shooting pain in the lower back that becomes more painful when sitting, bending over, or standing for periods of time. In some circumstances, the radiating pain travels down to other parts of the body, including the legs, groin, or feet. If lying down alleviates the back pain, it's more likely that you are suffering from discogenic pain.
  • Herniated Disc - Herniated discs are back injuries that frequently occur in motor vehicle accidents. The lumbar vertebrae in your spinal column are supported and separated by spinal discs. When you suffer a herniated disc, the soft material inside the affected spinal discs comes into contact with nerve tissue causing severe pain.
  • Spinal Stenosis - After a motor vehicle accident, the spinal cord's bone channel housing can begin to narrow. This occurs when either a piece of bone or a ruptured disc slides into the spinal canal. The symptoms include sharp, intense back pain caused by the pressure applied to the nerves. Intense back pain may be a warning sign of nerve damage or injury.
