The Link Between Hair Relaxers and Cancer

The National Institutes of Health recently released findings from a study that show a link between the use of chemical hair relaxers to straighten naturally curly hair and increased risk of certain cancers.

For example, women who reported using chemical hair relaxers “frequently”–defined in the study by four or more uses per year–more than doubled their chances of developing uterine cancer.

Many popular brands of chemical straighteners, relaxers and other hair smoothing products contain potentially unsafe chemicals such as parabens, bisphenol A, metals, and formaldehyde. The prolonged exposure of these harmful chemicals to a person’s scalp may increase risk of cancer.

While the alarming findings of the NIH study are relevant to any woman, regardless of race or ethnicity, who has ever used any type of chemical hair straightening, perming or smoothing products, the study’s author notes that the findings might be especially relevant to Black women, because “Black women use hair straightening or relaxer products more frequently and tend to initiate use at earlier ages than other races and ethnicities.”

While Black women made up only 7% of the study’s participants, they accounted for nearly 60% of those who reported using chemical hair straightening products in the last year, whether professionally or at home. Additionally, a 2019 study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology reported that the rate of uterine cancer has been rising among Black women in recent years.

Because we can’t stop accidents from happening, we do what we can to help minimize their long-term impact. We put more money in your pocket, where it belongs.
