UNITED STATES – According to an online article published earlier this year by www.citylab.com, pedestrian accident fatalities have been on the rise over thepast decade, climbing more than 35% since 2008, and Georgia ranks six for one of the top 20 deadliest states for pedestrians.*
Georgia is considered one of the deadliest states for pedestrians according to data published by citylab.com, placing Georgia at number 6 of the 20 deadliest states. The reasons for why some states and cities are more dangerous for pedestrians than others are wide-ranging. However, one big reason, which seems to plague many “sun belt” states, is that the roads and intersections are large enough for vehicles but provide little room for pedestrians. For instance, large intersections can make it difficult for pedestrians to cross the street in a short amount of time, and this is especially true for pedestrians who may have limited mobility.
In addition to having large roadways and intersections, the type of vehicles driven in some states contributesto the dangers associated with pedestrian accidents. For example, states that have more SUVs and larger vehicles are more likely to pose a danger to pedestrians. After all, larger vehicles will usually have a greater impact in the event a collision occurs, causing more harm. SUVs may also have limited visibility that prevents from seeing all surrounding pedestrians.
Georgia Saw Increase in Pedestrian Deaths in 2018
Pedestrian accidents are on the rise across the entire United States, but some states, including Georgia, have seen an alarming increaseinsuch accidents, especially in 2018. In the first half of 2018, 133 pedestrians were killed in Georgia, which is a 32% increase from the number of pedestrians killed in accidents in the first half of 2017. Whether the larger roads and intersections in Georgia are to blame, or driver or pedestrian behavior, pedestrian accidents continue to end the lives of innocent victims all too soon.
