SAVANNAH, GA. – May 16, 2018 (wtoc.com) A report from wtoc.com details the most dangerous intersections in Savannah for vehicle accidents.
Based on collision data, several intersections in the city of Savannah are dangerous for motorists and pedestrians. The top six dangerous intersections in the city include:
- Abercorn and White Bluff
- Interstate 16 and Chatham Parkway
- King George and Abercorn
- Abercorn and Rio Road
- DeRenne Avenue and Truman Parkway
- Martin Luther King and 37th Street
While morning rush hour can be hectic and accident-filled inside the city, the majority of vehicle accidents at these intersections occur between the hours of noon and 6 p.m. This is the time when people are usually on their way home from work or school. First responders say people are in too much of a hurry and drive dangerously in the city.
Some intersections are being improved to increase driver safety — like the $6.7 million project on DeRenne that might be completed by 2022 — but many of the accidents at Savannah’s intersections have nothing to do with the intersections themselves. Driver error accounts for 96 percent of intersection collisions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Law enforcement officials in Savannah might respond to calls at any of city’s more than 4,000 intersections. They are hoping Georgia’s new law banning handheld cell phone use will lower the number of vehicle collisions in the area. The law bans the use of all handheld electronic devices and will take effect July 1. Drivers will have a 90-day grace period when the law kicks in, after which they will receive citations starting at $50 for the first violation.
