ATLANTA, GA. – According to an online news story reported at ajc.com, road closures in the Atlanta, Georgia, area have already begun in anticipation of the Super Bowl. The closures will last until the event is over and will particularly affect morning and evening traffic.*
Atlanta is playing host to Super Bowl LIII, when the New England Patriots will face the Los Angeles Rams. The event is scheduled for Sunday, February 3, but preparations for the game are well underway in the city. On January 22, road closures began around downtown Atlanta in anticipation of the big game. These closures will stay in place and continue to affect traffic until the end of the event.
Several streets in the area of Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Centennial Olympic Park are closed off starting January 22. Here is a list of the closures in the area:
- Baker Street – Closed from Centennial Olympic Park Drive to Luckie Street
- Mitchell Street – Closed from the southbound lanes of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to Elliot Street
- Martin Luther King Jr. Drive – Southbound lanes closed from Northside Drive to Centennial Olympic Park Drive
- Mangum Street – Closed from Markham Street to Foundry Street
The closures could cause congestion in other parts of downtown, as more drivers are forced away from these areas. Drivers who regularly take these routes will want to find alternate ways to get to their destinations until the Super Bowl is over. It is not clear if more roads will close as the game draws nearer, but local media stations will keep up with closures and update motorists on traffic delays.
