GEORGIA- Car crashes caused by loose truck tires are leading to concerns in Georgia, according to 13WMAZ.COM. In one incident, a woman was killed when two tires broke from a large truck and traveled across multiple lanes of Interstate 75 before crashing through her windshield. The 36-year-old woman died instantly in that incident.*

Within days, another similar incident occurred when a tire broke free from a semi-truck on Interstate 75 and caused two separate crashes that involved a total of three cars. One of the victims ended up hospitalized as a result.

While police say that these types of collisions are uncommon, the incidents are disturbing and indicate the need to be incredibly careful when traveling around large trucks.

Tire malfunctions are involved in many fatal crashes across the United States every year. Recent numbers from sources including the NHTSA, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, indicate that tire malfunctions contribute to at least 700 deadly crashes in one year.

Trucks are involved in many more crashes each year that involve factors other than their tires. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety writes that 4,136 people were killed in crashes with large trucks in 2018. Defective equipment is just one of the causes of these incidents. Studies indicate that 55 percent of trucks involved in crashes had one or more mechanical violations.
