WASHINGTON D.C. – According to a news alert posted on cpsc.gov, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is calling for an increase in water safety vigilance following two summers of the pandemic.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission released its annual drowning and submersion report, and the report shows that nonfatal drowning injuries and fatal child drownings in kids under the age of 15 continue to be high. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging families to “make water safety a priority.” The CPSC also states that child drownings are the leading cause of unintentional death for children between 1 to 4 years old.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission report states that between 2017 and 2019, there were an average of 389 fatal drownings documented per year involving children under the age of 15. The report also states that nonfatal drowning injuries concerning kids younger than fifteen years of age increased by 17 percent in 2021. A total of 6,800 injuries were reported as compared to 5,800 injuries in 2020. Seventy-three percent of pool-related drownings involved children under the age of five. Two-thirds of fatal child drownings in pools happened in residential environments such as the victim’s residence, the home of a friend or family member, or a neighbor’s residency.

According to CPSC Chair Alex Hoehn-Saric, water safety vigilance is very important for parents and caregivers, and they urge parents and caregivers to review pool safety tips and sign their children up for swim lessons.

Parents and caregivers should follow the following pool safety tips in and around the water:

  • Never leave children unattended in or near water.
  • If you have a pool, install barriers to prevent children from accessing the water.
  • Learn CPR.
  • Learn how to swim.
  • Teach your children how to swim.
  • Keep kids away from pool pipes, drains, and openings to avoid entrapment accidents.
  • Use drain covers that comply with federal safety standards.
  • Visit Kids’ Corner on PoolSafely.gov for helpful information and take the Pool Safely Pledge.
