UNITED STATES – Driving is a way of life for most Americans and does not come without its risks. City drivers are more likely to be involved in a car wreck but the chances of a fatal crash occurring are higher if you crash in a rural area, according to an online news report published on ParsonsSun.com.
Research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) demonstrates that in 2017, there were 37,133 traffic-related deaths. This translates to 11.4 driving deaths per every 100,000 people in the United States.
Driving has long been a primary cause of teenage deaths due to the fact that younger drivers have less experience and are much more likely to engage in risky driving behavior. To learn more about keeping families safe in vehicles, click here.
There has been a small rise in traffic-related deaths over the past five years, however, it appears that over the longer term, lesser people are being killed in automobile accidents.
While safety improvements over the past 25 years have reduced the number of traffic fatalities, there are certain times of day and week that are much more dangerous for drivers. While automobile accidents can occur at any time and under any set of circumstances, data from the NHTSA provides that vehicular accidents are much more likely to occur on weekends and at night. In 2017, 70% more deadly crashes occurred between 6:00 pm and 9:00 p.m. than between 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Friday through Sunday also sees about 25% more deadly accidents per day when compared to Monday-Thursday.
