ATLANTA, GA – A survey shows that one section of metro Atlanta is one of the most dangerous areas for pedestrians. According to a list of the most dangerous places for pedestrians in the United States published by Smart Growth America, the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Alpharetta area ranked 19th on a list.

The Smart Growth America study examined the pedestrian accident statistics from the past ten years, ending just before the coronavirus pandemic in 2019. The study results discovered that the number of fatal pedestrian accidents involving walkers grew by more than 45 percent across the United States.

The Smart Growth America study also discovered that the Atlanta metro area, particularly Sandy Springs and Alpharetta, ranked as the 19th most dangerous area for walkers, joggers, and bicyclists. These North Fulton cities have had a history of severe fatal pedestrian accidents.

In 2018, one Alpharetta City Council member advised local officials to look at the area’s pedestrian safety problems following a deadly pedestrian accident involving an SUV and a pedestrian who was trying to cross the street after stepping off a bus. The former Alpharetta City Council member stated that the accident was tragic and the city must do a better job keeping pedestrians safe. He proposed the city develop more signalized crosswalks, especially at MARTA bus stops. The former Alpharetta City Council member also proposed looking at areas with the highest pedestrian activity and making those areas safer.

According to the news report, the death rate for pedestrians walking in lower-income neighborhoods was double the death rate in middle-income neighborhoods. The study also found that older Americans are far more likely to be pedestrian accident victims than younger adults. Black Americans also have an 82% greater chance of being struck and killed by drivers, according to the study.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.
