A news article published on FREIGHTWAVES.COM reports that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a new study that has found large trucks equipped with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Forward Collision Warning systems could reduce 40% of all rear-end accidents.
The IIHS study examined information collected on accidents per vehicle mile traveled from over 60 motor carriers that operate tractor-trailers trucks and other trucks that weigh 33,000 pounds or more. The study discovered that large trucks equipped with Forward Collision Warning were involved in 22% fewer accidents, and trucks with Automatic Emergency Braking Systems had 12% fewer accidents than trucks without either of the technologies.
Front Crash Prevention Systems use radar, sensors, and cameras to monitor the roadway ahead. Some systems only include Forward Collision Warning, which warns the driver of obstacles in the road ahead. Automatic Emergency Braking Systems automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes to avert an accident or reduce its severity.
According to IIHS President David Harkey, the benefits of the accident avoidance technologies are so effective that they should be standard equipment on all new commercial trucks.
IIHS Director of Statistical Services Eric Teoh, stated that Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning Systems reduced rear-end collisions by 41% and 44%, respectively.
The IIHS study was comprised of approximately 2,000 truck accidents occurring over 2 billion miles driven from 2017 to 2019. The IIHS study excluded accidents without major property damage or injuries.
The study provides the evidence necessary to prove Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking systems greatly reduce the accident risk for semi-tractor-trailer trucks and other large trucks. In addition to Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, disc brakes, and electronic stability control technology reduces the total Cost of Ownership (TCO) due to collision repairs costs.
