AL- Alabama is working towards accomplishing zero traffic fatalities throughout the state, over a 25-year period, according to DRIVESAFEALABAMA.com. Statistics indicate that people in Alabama have more than a one out of three chance of being in a crash that results in an injury or death at some point in their lifetime.*
Traffic accidents occur on average every 200 seconds in Alabama, with more than half of all accidents taking place between dusk and dawn. Driving at night creates other risks, such as visibility problems, but also, there is a higher risk of alcohol-impaired drivers on the road after dark.
Some risk factors identified by the state include texting, failure to use a seatbelt, and driving on rural roads. Texting and driving is illegal, but many people still continue to text or use their smartphone for other purposes while driving, which could mean they are still taking their eyes off the roadway. The frightening truth about texting and driving is that a person who is texting while behind the wheel is 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash than someone who is not using their phone.
While the vast majority of people use seatbelts, crash statistics from Alabama indicate that nearly 60 percent of people killed in crashes did not buckle up. Drivers in urban areas are more likely to be involved in collisions, however, the worst accidents where fatalities are involved, are more likely to occur on rural roadways.
Drivers who wish to stay safe should always remain sober when driving, use their seatbelts, follow traffic signals and speed limits, and avoid looking at their smartphones while operating a vehicle. In 2017, almost twenty-nine percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes were younger than twenty-five years of age.
