UNITED STATES – According to an online news report from abcnews.go.com, deaths from hit-and-run accidents are at the highest they ever have been, per a new study released on Thursday, May 16, 2019 by AAA.

Deadly hit-and-run accidents are at an all-time high in the United States, per a study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

Per the study, two thousand forty nine people died in hit-and-run accidents in 2016, which represents a sixty two percent increase from 2009, the last time in which a decreasing trend was recorded. According to AAA, the data retrieved from 2016 makes this year the deadlines on record since 1975 when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started compiling statistics on motor vehicle accidents that resulted in deaths.

According to the executive director of AAA, “[h]it-and-run crashes in the United States are trending in the wrong direction.” The AAA study uncovered that most of the fatalities in motor vehicle accidents involved pedestrians or bicyclists and that nearly twenty percent of all pedestrian fatalities over the last ten years were as a result of hit-and-run accidents, which is compared to one percent of all driver deaths.

Per the study, the top states where there are deadly hit-and-run accidents are New Mexico, Florida, and Louisiana. The states with the lowest rates of hit-and-run crashes are Maine, New Hampshire, and Minnesota.

The study further noted that hit-and-runs typically occur when it is dark out (between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.), which makes it easier for a suspect to escape an incident without being seen by others. Hit-and-run accidents are also common on roadways with lower speed limits, where pedestrians cross on roadways, and in places where there is a lot of foot traffic. Poor weather conditions also contribute to hit-and-run accidents, per the study.
