SAVANNAH, GA – According to a news report published on WSAV.COM, safety advocates with AAA state that new crash safety tests prove that seemingly small increases in speed can magnify the severity of a car crash and reduce the probability of surviving. These tests were conducted due to concerns over several states considering raising speed limits.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Humanetics and the AAA Foundation came together to examine how speed influences the probabilities of sustaining injuries in a car crash. The collision tests were administered at 40, 50, and 56 miles per hour.

According to the director of Traffic Safety Advocacy and Research for AAA, Jake Nelson, the collision testing that you see on TV typically happens at speeds of 35 to 40 miles per hour. These speeds are slower than the speeds typically driven on highways and interstates.

Mr. Nelson stated that the test results showed that accidents occurring at 40 miles per hour caused a fair amount of damage. However as the testers began to increase speeds, the damage to the vehicle damage and the driver’s potential injury increased in severity.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s David Harkey, accident tests at 56 miles per hour produced damage that significantly compromised the car’s occupant compartment, increasing the likelihood of injury to the face, brain, neck, and lower leg area.

Mr. Harkey stated that in the early 1990’s the national maximum speed limit was abolished, and so many states began to raise posted limits on interstates. Twenty-five years later, this law change took over 37,000 lives on roads throughout the country.

Traffic and auto safety groups also stated that these crash tests indicated that occupants are not automatically safer because they are riding in a newer motor vehicle with enhanced safety features.

Mr. Harkey stated that more than 25% of the traffic deaths in the United States listed speed as a contributing factor, and that number hasn’t changed very much over the past ten years.
