USA- The Federal Motor Safety Administration online published findings from a study on the causes of deadly large truck crashes throughout the United States. Some contributing aspects include the design of the vehicles, the experience and training of the driver, weather conditions, and the traffic on the relevant roadway.
Other factors come into play in the moments before the incident. Tire blowouts, or a split-second decision to turn at an intersection can have devastating results.
Truck crashes, like all preventable vehicle wrecks, often include speeding, fatigue, and drunk driving.
Researchers define critical events as the incident that caused the vehicles to go down the path that would lead to the collision. A critical reason is an error, vehicle failure, or a condition that leads to the crash.
The study determined that there were three critical events most often associated with large trucks and they are attributable to human error. The first is a truck running out of their lane and entering another traffic lane or driving off the roadway. Next was the loss of vehicle control. These instances were caused by cargo shifting, traveling too fast, or poor roadway conditions. The third event is the crashing of the truck into the rear of another vehicle in the truck’s lane of travel.
Critical reasons were divided into four categories. Non-performance, which includes drivers falling asleep, or suffering a medical emergency, were events that are included in this category. Recognition crashes are those in which drivers were distracted and did not react adequately. Decision crashes involve speeding and following too closely behind other vehicles, and finally, performance crashes are those in which the driver panics, or was not able to control the vehicle.
