Atlanta Accident Lawyers, Montlick & Associates Reviews Important Safeguards; Steps to Prevent Dangerous Distractions from Kids in Cars
According to a newly released study on the dangers of distracted driving, distractions from kids riding in the backseat pose an even greater threat than distractions from cell phones and text messages. These startling findings prompted the Atlanta Accident Lawyers at Montlick & Associates to produce the video posted at the top of this page; to review important safeguards and educate the public on the dangers of driving when children are present.
According to the study, kids are twelve times more distracting to drivers than talking on a cell phone. The study also found that when kids are present, parents take their eyes off the road an average of 3½ minutes every 16-minute car ride – or almost 20% of the trip.
Some of the distractions include:
According to the Georgia Personal Injury Law firm, it’s important for parents to be aware of the dangers, and to take immediate steps to minimize these distractions. One step recommended by safety experts is for parents to set up car rules in advance, so children know what behavior is expected of them during the ride. For example, parents should explain to kids that if they drop something during the ride, they must wait until the car comes to a full stop to get it back. Another safety recommendation is for parents is to feed kids before leaving, because giving them snacks in the car encourages them to make demands that cannot be safely accommodated.
The types of distractions caused by kids are widespread and varied. But no matter what the child’s age or situation, the safest practice, according to the Atlanta Accident Lawyers at Montlick & Associates, is to pull over and stop the car – as soon as it is safe to do so - before tending to your child’s needs.
