BUI Charges Follow Fatal Boating Accident on Lake Murray in South Carolina
COLUMBIA, SC. – According to a news story reported online at wistv.com, boating under the influence charges have followed a fatal boating accident that occurred on Lake Murray in Columbia, South Carolina. One person was tragically killed in the crash, the report says, and two others were injured.*
The accident happened during the late evening, close to the Lighthouse Marina by Johnson Marina Road. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and WIS report that around 9 p.m., authorities were called to the scene on a report of a boating collision. Officials arrived to find that a cigarette boat had somehow crashed into a pontoon boat on the lake. Further descriptions of the boats were not provided.
It is not clear how the accident happened, and the report did not say in what way the two boats crashed. At some point during their investigation, authorities developed reason to suspect that the driver of the cigarette boat was under the influence. This driver was identified as a 53-year-old man. His city of residence was not reported.
WIS states that a family of three was on the pontoon boat at the time of the crash, and the father was tragically killed in the accident. He was identified in the news report as a 68-year-old man from Chapin, South Carolina.
WIS further reports that the mother sustained significant injuries that resulted in the amputation of one of her legs. In addition, the report says the daughter was also taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. The mother’s and daughter’s ages were not reported. Both are from Chapin.
It is not clear if the driver of the cigarette boat was injured. WIS reports he was arrested and charged with three counts of felony boating under the influence. Investigation into the accident is ongoing.
