Multiple Semi-Trucks Involved in Fatal Accident on I-85 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC. – According to a news report posted online at foxcarolina.com, multiple semi-trucks were involved in a fatal traffic accident that occurred on Interstate 85 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The driver of one of the semi-trucks was tragically killed in the accident, according to the report.*
The accident occurred during the late afternoon on the southbound side of I-85, near mile marker 76. South Carolina Highway Patrol and Fox Carolina report that around 3 p.m., several vehicles were traveling south on the interstate and came to a stop for an unknown reason. The report described the stop as “unexpected,” but did not provide information about what caused the vehicles to stop.
A Freightliner semi-truck that was also traveling south then crashed into the back of three other vehicles, including two other semi-trucks and a box truck. Fox Carolina and the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office report that the driver of the Freightliner truck was tragically killed in the accident. The driver has not yet been identified by officials.
The report did not say whether the drivers of the other three vehicles or anyone else in the vehicles was injured. It is not clear how many people were involved in the accident in total.
The accident caused the interstate to shut down for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the area. At the time of the Fox Carolina report’s posting, officials believed the road closure would be in effect for about four hours. South Carolina Highway Patrol advised drivers during this time to use Exit 77 or Exit 78 on I-85 Business to avoid the traffic backup.
Troopers are still in the process of investigating the fatal wreck, and they had not released additional information about the accident or their preliminary findings when the news report was published.
