Accident Victim Tragically Ejected in a Car Accident in Richland County, South Carolina

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that occurred in Richland County, South Carolina.*  Tragically, the victim was thrown from their vehicle and then struck by a hit-and-run driver. 

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol Corporal Matt Southern, the initial car accident occurred at approximately 1:40 in the morning on westbound I-20 by Mile Marker 75.  Corporal Southern reported that a Honda Civic was driving on the interstate when it left the roadway and struck a guardrail. 

The Honda driver, who wasn't wearing his seatbelt, was thrown back onto the roadway.  According to law enforcement accident investigators, an unknown vehicle struck the driver and fled the collision scene.  Tragically, the ejected driver passed away in the incident.  The report states it is not clear if the first or second crash caused the victim's death.  Corporal Southern yielded to the Richland County Coroner's Office for further news concerning the victim.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently working with the agency's Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) to ascertain how the accidents occurred.  Law enforcement authorities stated that they do not have a description of the suspect's vehicle.
