Alleged Drunk Driver Caused Fatal Wrong-way Collision on I-77 in York County, South Carolina

YORK COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA - According to a news story on heraldonline.com, a woman from Charlotte, North Carolina has been allegedly charged with "DUI Resulting in Death" after causing a fatal wrong-way collision on I-77 in South Carolina.*

According to both court and law enforcement records, the 26-year-old woman was arrested and allegedly charged with felony "DUI Resulting in Death."  She was booked into the York County Jail.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Gary Miller stated that the woman has also been allegedly charged with "Open Container of Alcohol in a Moving Vehicle."

The fatal crash occurred at around 11:30 pm on I-77 northbound by Mile Marker 84, according to Highway Patrol Master Trooper Ridgeway.  The wrong-way driver was in an SUV and was traveling in the wrong direction along I-77 when it collided with the Jeep driven by the victim who was traveling northbound. 

The victim was a 32-year-old woman from Charlotte, North Carolina.  She tragically passed away at the accident scene, according to York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.

The suspected drunk driver is currently in the York County jail and she is awaiting her initial court appearance.  She faces a felony DUI charge that carries up to 25 years in prison if she is found guilty. 

The fatal wrong-way collision is currently under investigation by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety Multi-Agency Accident Investigation Team and the York County Coroner’s Office.
